With eyes full of anticipation, Alex waited behind the gate
To enter into a magical world; he could barely wait.
With impatient eagerness he stood the longest line
To ride the pretty carousel of majesty divine.

“Look at me!” he said to dad and waved as he went ‘round.
He wondered at the twinkling lights and every fun-filled sound.
They boarded next the ferris wheel, and were lifted in the air.
Nothing else matters to a six-year old boy as long as Dad is there.

“Dad!” He cried, “Could I have one of those?” And tugged his father’s vest.
“Of course you can,” he replied, “My boy deserves the best.”
A wonderful treat was handed down to the anxious little guy.
The cotton candy was delicious. The best that Dad could buy!

They walked around the happy grounds, bought a drink and more;
Enjoyed all the amazing sights he’s never seen before.
They passed a crowded tent gith singers singing gay.
Alex cried out with delight, “Dad! This is the greatest day!”

Dad lifted him on his shoulders so he could see the show.
Then in between acts one and two said, “Son, it’s time to go.”
The tired boy did not want to leave. “Can’t we stay here please?
I’m having so much fun, and there’s more I want to see.”

“I know, son, but it’s getting late and soon it’ll be time for bed.”
Alex nodded quietly then hung his teary head.
They walked past the show they saw, the rides of fun galore
And crept on by the booths of food and games he’d see no more.

“Dad?” Alex said sadly as he wiped away a tear,
“Will we ever come again?” His dad only smiled and knowingly said,
“Yes, the same time next year!”
